Message from the President - February 2012
By Jamie Bleay, CCI-Vancouver President
CCI Vancouver’s recent seminar (February 18, 2012) was a great success. Isadorah Goh and Bruce Hurst from the CGA firm Reid Hurst Nagy reminded the 60 + attendees of the importance of having accurate and complete financial statements, let us know what to expect with the pending mandatory requirements, confirmed that the CRA was keeping a watchful eye on strata corporations and their “income” and lastly, how the need for depreciation reports and funding of the reports will impact on the financial affairs of strata corporations. Next up we had Glad Schoenfeld, an engineer from Read Jones Christoffersen (check spelling please) and Kevin Grasty, an engineer from Halsall Engineers who collectively spoke about the changes to the Strata Property Act and regulations with respect to the requirement to prepare depreciation reports. The content of their presentations was very extensive and informative and suffice to say the audience was quick to ask lots of questions in an effort to try to learn more about the depreciation report requirements. A show of hands after their presentation confirmed that everyone wanted to see them back in six months time to tell everyone how the “roll out” was in fact working! Given the number of strata corporations in the Province and the limited number of “qualified persons” who will be hired to prepare the deprecation reports time will tell if there is in fact enough time to meet the December 13, 2013 deadline for the delivery of the first depreciation reports.

Bill C-288 (The National Flag of Canada Act) is designed to prevent individuals or organizations from stopping citizens from displaying the Canadian flag. This legislation makes it a federal offence for any person to interfere with another’s right to fly the flag.
CCI National Council Update
By Jamie Bleay, CCI-Vancouver President
As many of you know, I have been appointed by the CCI Vancouver chapter board to be the National council representative for 2011. In that capacity I am required to participate in teleconference calls and face to face meeting with the entire National council and the National executive of CCI to identify issues of concern with our Chapter, to learn about initiatives put in place or being developed by CCI National for use by our chapter to help it grow its membership, identify and appoint new volunteers to our board and our chapter committees, to market the CCI message as “your condo connection” and to improve the educational mandate of CCI Vancouver.
